We see non-chronological scenes of Chelsea with each client as they cry on her shoulder about how much money they are losing yet they choose to spend an astronomical amount on an escort, just to talk about their financial problems.Įventually, the film progresses into a story of how two people in a committed relationship end up dealing with problems that arise from one of them being a call girl.
The point of pleasure as something that does not have a monetary value gets hammered home. The comparison between the two is the perfect comment on a very real contemporary event. Chelsea deals in human fulfilment while her boyfriend deals in human perfection. In almost every scene the economic state of the country is mentioned by each’s respective clients. The film begins as a “compare and contrast” of Chelsea’s and Chris’ professions. She lives in a gorgeous Manhattan apartment with her hunky personal trainer boyfriend Chris and makes a living seeing men who can afford her insanely high rate. For a film that features such stilted acting, static camera movements and the appearance of a shallow subject, The Girlfriend Experience ends up communicating very real themes through almost zero emotion.Ĭhelsea/Christine (depending on which client she is seeing) is an upper-class escort to the max. The latter of which grows to almost unattainable standards in a time of need. This may sound like the plot of an over-simplified melodrama but what The Girlfriend Experience ends up being is a meaningful and hypnotically beautiful story of money buying happiness and the ultimate pursuit of companionship.
